Snorkel Vest

At its simplest, snorkel vest is a simple flotation device. Its main purpose is to keep the wearer afloat while snorkeling. They don’t have to be specially designed for snorkeling; any life vest will usually do the trick. One thing you do want to watch for is that the vest allows a full range of upper body movement. It can be hard to swim around to see what there is to see if you can’t move your arms well.

However in recent years an adjustable snorkel vest has gained popularity. Instead of simpler life vests, it is a high visibility vest that is inflatable. This allows a wearer to tailor the flotation of the vest to their comfort level. If a swimmer wants complete flotation with no swimming required, simply fully inflate the vest. If they only want a slight boost to their swimming abilities, they can just add a little air to the vest.

Snorkel vests have been embraced by the cruise industry because they limit the liability of the cruise liners. Some cruise liners have gone so far as to require a snorkel vest for all snorkelers. If you are booking a cruise you should check with your travel agent or with the company to see if they require vests. If you bring your own, it will save the rental costs.
